Passive sustainability is the discipline of creating buildings that perform efficiently because of how they are built, not because of what is plugged into them.

The word "passive" is intentional. A passively designed building uses the sun, the wind, the land, its construction materials and the site orientation as its primary energy tools:

• Calculated overhangs: Roof profiles engineered to shade south-facing glass in July while letting low winter sun penetrate deep into the room.

• Strategic wind blocking: Exterior wall positioning designed to deflect cold northwest winter winds away from living areas.

• Thermal massing: Elements like concrete floors or stone walls that naturally absorb ambient heat during the day and radiate it back at night.

None of these features have moving parts or require constant maintenance. And none of them stop working when the grid goes down.
